Alberta Canola chair focused on increased engagement with policy makers, growers

by

The Alberta Canola Producer Commission is prioritizing grower engagement and taking the initiative to communicate with policy makers, says Roger Chevraux, chair of Alberta Canola,

RealAgriculture’s Kara Oosterhuis spoke with Chevraux at the first annual Alberta Canola Conference at Lethbridge, Alta., held last week.

Chevraux says the board realized a couple years ago that there was a need to engage more with growers and give growers across the province a space to provide input to levy dollar spending. This feedback is important to ensure that the board and its plan is not missing anything or see if priorities need to be adjusted.

While in the past much of the focus has been on research and grower engagement, there is growing interest in shaping policy, Chevraux says. Alberta Canola recognizes the disconnect between policy makers and growers, and are taking the initiative to reach out to policy makers to make sure there is an understanding of the industry and to express the needs of growers. This could also create future opportunities for research, he says.
