American grain giant Bunge and Viterra, owned by Switzerland’s Glencore, are reportedly in talks to become one super grain company.
In a reversal of a few years ago, this time it appears it is Bunge setting out to take on Viterra to create a company that would have extensive assets in nearly every grain type and geography in North America.
Consolidation is nothing new to agriculture, but this particular merger, if allowed to go forward, could create some competition headaches. For example, Bunge owns a stake in G3’s elevators in Western Canada, which operate in the same markets as Viterra’s elevators. Both Bunge and Viterra also own canola processing facilities.
We want to know: are you for, against, or indifferent about the planned merger?
