SUMMARY:
We are seeing the typical weeds we are seeing at this time of year….maybe it means we are on track?
The weed scientists are waiting for the weeds to emerge in Western Canada.
How well would a herbicide help on brownish weeds?
In the east there is worries about it being too cold for herbicides, re: crop injury. But, with colder weather, comes crops being a bit behind too, so that’s something to keep in mind
Its tough in a forage crop to manage dandelions. You are not alone in this.
What about the dreaded “T” word? (tillage)
There are certain weeds that do require tillage, however. It’s just how it goes. We have a love-hate relationship with it.
Timing is everything
There’s different types of plows, especially more in Europe. Allows you to plow, but at different depths.
Once you till — in a perfect world, wait until after the corp is emerged to make a pass with the sprayer. Otherwise, it’ll largely be an ineffective application
Where are we at with managing resistant wild oats? There are a few tools in a tool box. Most are long term strategies
Cover crops! Keep that ground covered. Especially if you use specific crops targeted at reducing some of the hardier weeds, like cereal rye for fleabane.
Micromoles of BOA can be really hard to determine
Cultural practices can be as effective as modes of action
Antagonism in the tank
Sometimes we add as many modes of action into the tank for efficiency sake…but, this isn’t always the best bang for your buck
Pre-seed burnoff: is it worth it? Especially when times get tight? It often pays off, because of the critical weed free period
Chase the sprayer, not the other way around
Can I lower water volumes, or not? Depends on the product! Read your labels!
Where you really don’t want to cheat on water volumes is on contact herbicides
More is always better when it comes to water, but there are always more factors
The road back to profitability for the pork sector is likely long and difficult as Canadian producers continue to face a troublesome combination of declining domestic demand, fewer opportunities in export markets, and the spectre of tougher U.S. animal welfare regulations that could drive prices lower. It all adds up to tough times for pork…
