Rémi Taillon and Sophie Brodeur named Quebec’s Outstanding Young Farmers

Grain-fed veal producers Rémi Taillon and Sophie Brodeur of Ferme Réso, have been named Quebec’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2023.

Based at at Saint-Dominque, Que., Ferme Réso has grown from the farm that Sophie grew up on. The pair began the transition to full ownership and management of the farm in 2009.  After two years, Sophie and Rémi had bought 50 per cent the farm’s shares. They used the transition period to improve their efficiency and increase their financial autonomy.

Ferme Réso grows all its own feed for the veal calves on 476 aces, 230 of which is owned. They produce about 1,200 calves per year.

Quebec’s OYF event held was held last week and featured three finalists:

  • Jean-Philippe Côté et Julie Richer- -Ferme Malaco- Magog
  • Simon Plante et Alison Blouin- Polyculture Plante- Sainte-Pétronille Ile d’Orléans
  • Rémi Taillon et Sophie Brodeur- Ferme Réso- Saint-Dominique

Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ program is an annual competition to recognize farmers that exemplify excellence in their profession and promote the tremendous contribution of agriculture. Open to participants 18 to 39 years of age, making the majority of income from on-farm sources, participants are selected from seven regions across Canada, with two national winners chosen each year.

This year’s final event will be held at Laval, Que., from November 22-26, 2023.
