Why flexibility matters more than ever in 2024

TruFlex® canola was designed to deliver excellent control of critical weed species alongside unparalleled flexibility when it comes to application window and rates. This flexibility was originally intended to support growers in spending more time doing the things they love; however, as weather patterns trend towards extremes, flexibility has increasingly become a critical component when determining canola traits.

Globally, the June-July-August season in 2023 was the warmest on record by a large margin. Higher temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns are expected to continue in the coming years. TruFlex canola offers growers a flexible and reliable choice, and the freedom to better adapt their crop protection strategy during the season.

“When it comes to TruFlex, flexibility is not only a top priority, it is in the name,” says Bryan Bryson, Traits and Licensing Campaign Manager at Bayer Crop Science Canada. “Flexibility with herbicide application windows and rates is increasingly important to growers in light of the weather patterns we’ve seen in recent growing seasons.”

TruFlex canola uses elite germplasm combined with a proven herbicide trait to provide superior weed control and heightened yield potential. Glyphosate tolerance makes TruFlex canola a perfect pairing for Roundup® herbicides, which have an all-weather warranty and wider performance window.

Roundup herbicides can be applied under various weather conditions, in warmer and cooler temperatures, and work with a lower water volume. This means more flexibility in spray timing during the season and more acres per day through the sprayer. When combined with Roundup brand herbicides, Truflex canola controls 51 critical weed species including wild oats, cleavers, dandelion, and foxtail barley.

“TruFlex is an industry leading trait with outstanding flexibility,” says Bryson. “It’s rare to see both in one package.”

Getting the Best Return on Investment with TruFlex canola

“TruFlex canola is a strong tool when used well,” says Bryson. “If you’re looking to get the best return on investment with TruFlex, it’s important that you surround it with a strong strategy that starts before seeding.”

If you are no-tilling, selecting the right pre-seed burndown products ensures that your growing season starts as cleanly as possible.

Once the seeds are in the ground, consistent scouting is critical. To maximize results, spray your first application of a Roundup brand herbicide between cotyledon and two-leaf stage to protect your crops during the critical weed-free period. If a second pass is needed, it can be applied up to first flower. Alternatively, you can use one larger application any time up to the six-leaf stage.

If you think that TruFlex canola might be right for you, reach out to your local retailer or seed representative who can help determine which hybrids are best for your farm.
