The Indian government has temporarily cancelled its longstanding and prohibitive tariff on yellow pea imports.
A government order published Thursday completely removes the 50 per cent duty on peas effective Dec. 8, 2023 through March 31, 2024.
Prior to the tariff taking effect in November 2017, India was Canada’s largest market for peas, accounting for more than 40 per cent of Canadian exports.
India’s minimum import price and rules restricting imports to a specific port have also been lifted, according to a Dec. 8 notice from the country’s commerce ministry.
More to come.
