TAFE unveils hydrogen-powered prototype tractor

by

When agriculture is ready for hydrogen-powered tractors, TAFE says they’ll be ready to roll.

Last month at Agritechnica 23, the India-based tractor manufacturer displayed a prototype hydrogen tractor with a 55 hp Simpson combustion engine. The tractor, which has participated in field demonstrations, has hydrogen tanks strategically positioned behind the seat and under the platform floor.

TAFE spokesperson Ravindran Vijayakumar says overall tractor power and performance is on par with diesel engines, and it surpasses Stage 5 engine emissions standards requirements.

Vijayakumar says showcasing the hydrogen-powered tractor at Agritechnica signifies the company’s commitment to exploring alternative fuels and sustainable solutions.  He notes that the company has been working on the tractor for more than two years; however, with no infrastructure for hydrogen refuelling currently in place there are no plans for commercialization.

Check out this video as Vijayakumar and RealAgriculture’s Bernard Tobin take a look at the TAFE hydrogen prototype tractor.

RealAgriculture’s coverage of Agritechnica is brought to you by Optimum GLY, a new canola trait technology from Corteva Agriscience.
