Damage from wireworms can go unnoticed at low levels — sometimes the only symptom is a missing seedling. The trouble is, wireworms have a multi-year life cycle, so early detection is key to management.
For this Wheat School episode, we’re back with Shad Milligan, seedcare specialist with Syngenta Canada, to talk about not just why wireworm has resurfaced as a pest, but also how the seed treatment options for management have changed over time.
Past insecticide products set back wireworm populations; however, in moving away from those products, populations started to build again and more producers need to be on alert for this early season pest.
Wireworms prefer cool soil, so a quick warm up and good moisture conditions could mean that damage is reduced as seedlings germinate and grow quickly. However, in prolonged cool conditions, wireworm will stay near the soil surface and feed on new seeds and seedling roots.
