New Holland is touting its recent joint venture with Raven industries as an opportunity for grain growers to access grain cart automation that can reduce cart operator stress and also reduce grain spillage.
Earlier this year, New Holland announced a joint venture with Raven Industries to make Raven Cart Automation available on its combines in 2024.
Raven Cart Automation is a local radio control unit link between a combine and up to six grain carts, giving the combine operator 100 percent control over the combine and the grain carts. In this report from Commodity Classic in Houston, Texas, New Holland marketing manager Nick Mortensen says “it really brings to the table the step towards autonomy that we’ve been looking for and turns a low-level [grain cart] operator into a pro-level operator in just a matter of minutes.”
Raven Cart Automation syncs the combine’s movement with the grain cart and functions as a driver-assist technology, allowing the combine operator to dictate positioning and speed of the grain cart during the cart filling process. The system activates once the grain cart driver is within 200 feet of the combine and syncs the cart tractor to the combine’s auger. The combine operator then controls the bin positioning, speed and direction of the grain cart.
Mortenson says field trials indicate that the technology can reduce cart operator stress by 22 per cent and cart spillage by 33 per cent.
Compatibility and connectivity are also key aspects of the technology. Mortenson notes that Raven Cart Automation is available for most New Holland tractors with CVT/PST transmission, model year 2020 or newer, and seven CR combines, model year 2015 and newer — CR6.80, CR6.90, CR7.80, CR8.90, CR9.90, CR10.90 and CR11.
