With a spring fire season that has fired up early and hot in Western Canada, there is no time like today to start working on a fire prevention plan. With most producers out in the field seeding, the risk of wildfires starting is high.
In this interview, Kaia Fossheim of AgSafe Alberta reviews on-farm fire mitigation, prevention and planning. Fossheim also gives us some examples of what producers are currently doing on the farm to control fires.
Grass build up around engines, hot exhaust pipes and the potential for electrical issues with equipment can create conditions prone to sparking fires. Prevention is key, and that can be as simple as up-to-date equipment maintenance and cleaning and spark arresters, to more involved jobs such as putting in fire breaks and removing deadfall.
