New deputy minister appointed for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

The prime minister announced the appointment of a new deputy minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) on Friday.

Lawrence Hanson, currently associate deputy minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada, has been chosen to replace Stefanie Beck, effective June 3, 2024, as the top bureaucrat in the federal agriculture department.

Beck is moving on to become deputy minister at National Defence, where she served as associate deputy minister prior to her appointment to AAFC in February 2023.

Hanson has previously served as associate deputy minister in the department of Fisheries and Oceans, and as assistant deputy at Transport Canada and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Studies from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of British Columbia.
