When all the policy focus on a changing climate has been on slowing or stopping the change from happening, a second aspect has been largely ignored: adaptation.
That’s the subject of a new policy concepts paper, “Climate Change in Canadian Agriculture: The Context and the Evidence Demonstrate that Policy Should Refocus on Adaptation,” penned by Al Mussell of Agri-Food Economic Systems.
Mussell says that agriculture has been wholly expected to do its part on climate change mitigation will little discussion or time spent on quantifying the potential impacts of climate change on agriculture.
That’s a problem, he says, as we need to think about food production not from only a domestic point of view, but from a global perspective. Globally, food scarcity is still a concern — how does Canadian agriculture adapt to climate change?
