Corn School: Tissue testing for higher yield

How do corn hybrids respond to foliar feeding? And what’s the potential yield impact and return on that investment?

Those are questions PRIDE Seeds agronomist Stephanie Myslik tackles on this episode of RealAgriculture Corn School. In 2023, Myslik ran a trial to evaluate how tissue testing and foliar feeding could impact the PRIDE hybrid A6929G4.

Working with Bryan Stennett from NutriAnalytics, Myslik tissue tested at three different growth stages — V2, V7 and VT/R1. After each test, foliar fertilizer was applied based on NutriAnalytics recommendations. At harvest, the foliar feeding delivered a 14.9 bu/ac yield advantage. Return on investment, after nutrient and application cost, checked in at a positive $31.67 per acre.

Myslik will repeat the trial in 2024 and this year she’ll add a fungicide to mitigate the impact of leaf diseases such as tar spot, which can significantly impact overall yield. In the video, she also shares tips on how to collect samples to ensure effective tissue testing and analysis.
