There are some very sad looking low spots in parts of southwestern Ontario, as excess water and water logged soils make growing difficult, especially for dry beans and soybeans.
Despite the rain, a stretch of better weather in the last week did mean that plenty of wheat has been harvested, so Peter “Wheat Pete” Johnson has some yields to discuss and some quality questions to answer.
Also in this week’s episode of Wheat Pete’s Word: aphid numbers on the rise, the trick to getting alfalfa to establish after wheat, and why patience is a virtue in regards to building soil health.

SUMMARY
- Water logged fields in southwestern Ontario, low spots, root rot, wet feet — probably the worst in 30+ years
- Harvest is going to be all over the map with corn maturity
- In Ontario, where the crop looks good it’s great
- Western Canada is variable. Some areas are burning up as the tap has turned off
- Warm air holds more water. That matters
- Warm, moist air insulates more — a warming loop
- Combines have had to go through water in the wheat. Wow
- Too many ruts while combining
- There are some areas looking for moisture, for sure
- Incredible wheat yields rolling
- Dr. Dave Hooker at University of Guelph-Ridgetown: 20 per cent better yields
- Falling number of wheat is hitting grades
- Straw yield is through the roof! What happened?
- Common factor: lower yields were hit by hottest weather during peak grain fill
- Low DON levels so far, even with some FDK
- Winter canola crop is also great this year, 75 to 80 bushel canola rolling in
- Have patience, don’t be in such a hurry
- Building soil health takes time. Check out the Agronomists on the topic here
- Organic matter — there’s such thing as too much
- Double crop bean dreams have been crushed. Sad trombone
- 1 per cent OM per 10 per cent clay content in a soil is probably the sweet spot
- What’s the value of straw? Watch this video!
- What about the value of fungicide? Very valuable this year!
- Everyone wants to know about wheat variety results ahead of seed decisions this fall
- Black point and smudge is showing up in the sample. Smudge is at the brush end, black point is on the germ end. It’s all about timing. Have enough of it, and it will discolour the flour
- Alert! Soybean aphids are building! Scout
- Tile-run soybeans might need some fertilizer. Foliar doesn’t give enough for the macros
- Poor pollination in corn? Early tasseling corn, smaller tassels?
- A standing crop is prone to losses. Why? Weather. Rodents.
- Hay crop establishment after cereal: establishment tips? Light tillage to stimulate wheat seed germ. 10 days later, spray, one day later, seed with a drill. No more than half inch down, and a band of MAP. No manure at establishment, please
