Wheat Pete’s Word, July 31: Atomic bomb raindrops, two-stage corn pollination, and ladybugs hard at work

by

It’s time to close out July with some important reminders, a plan for trying new things, and a prompting to check for ladybugs.

On this episode of Wheat Pete’s Word, host Peter Johnson also has to correct his math on soil organic matter goals, but that’s OK, that’s how we learn. Listen on to hear about why ladybugs are an indication to look closer, why destructive rainfall may become more frequent, and why corn pollination looks a little odd in some areas.

Summary

  • Change happens fast, and is happening even faster than before
  • Rainfall intensity has been horrendous for June and July in Ontario. Extremes are holding true
  • 14″ of rain in July just north of London
  • Wheat stubble has lakes in the field, thank goodness the crop is off
  • Warmer air holds more moisture, so more intense downpours will be more frequent
  • Will fields be erosion-ready? Canopy matters
  • An opportunity for cover crops — OFCAF opens Aug 1 for funding!
  • Soil Crop tours, and Ontario Soil Network road trip so you can learn some new ideas
  • Get off your phone while you’re driving tractor
  • Correction: 1% matter for every 10% clay….nope, it’s 1% organic carbon for 10% clay. 1.7% OM or 2% for every 10% clay
  • Wheat yields are amazing in some areas, from north to south!
  • Management pays
  • Poor pollination or two-stage pollination? What’s going on
  • Emergence of silks is all over the map
  • Check your silks, not the tassels, when it’s spray timing at issue
  • Tassels tell tales for yield, maybe, but silks need the protection
  • Ladybird beetles doing well. That’s an indication of a food source
  • Cover crop was loaded with corn leaf aphids!
  • Scout those western bean cutworm eggs too
  • Soybean aphids are on the rise in eastern Ontario
  • Oat/pea cover crop impact on the next crop?
  • Take as forage or work it in: it matters, to avoid a yield penalty from N tie-up (it’s all about the next year’s residue breakdown)
  • Need to account for what’s removed in a forage crop
  • Get N on with the oats in the fall
  • Use the fall spray pass to take out fall weeds, too
  • Alfalfa underseeded to wheat barely survives
  • Fleabane control — don’t let it go to seed
  • Wheat re-growth
  • Wheat heads that are too tall, a black stem and no seed?
