Beef Market Update: Prices drift lower, export volumes decline, and net feeder imports tick up

by

Live cattle trade in the south was quieter this week, and prices drifted lower says Anne Wasko of the Gateway Livestock Exchange, in this edition of the Beef Market Update.

While trade has been quieter, there’s still plenty to discuss about what’s happening in the beef and cattle markets both in the U.S. and Canada.

Of note, Wasko says is that export volumes are down but values are up, reflecting the strong prices of the last year. Data on the feeder cattle import and export trends are also telling, she says.

The overall feed import numbers have stabilized of late; however, Canada is now sitting at around 11 percent net import status on feeder cattle. That’s in contrast to past trends where Canada was a net exporter of feeder cattle. It’s an indication of how much the cattle industry has changed in the last decade and especially in the drought years of late.
