As Thanksgiving approaches, many students across the country will be making plans to head home for family celebrations. The ones that are unable to make it home though, may be looking at this upcoming holiday with a sense of impending loneliness.

This fall, Think Turkey, a partnership between Turkey Farmers of Canada and the Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors’ turkey sector, have announced that a fund has been set up with just these students in mind. The Join Thanksgiving Fund is a new initiative by the organization to “bring the joy of Canadian Thanksgiving to more post-secondary students.”

Until September 23, student groups and faculty can apply at ThinkTurkey.ca/JoinThanksgiving to receive one of eight $2500 grants towards on-campus Thanksgiving celebrations.

Mark Hubert, president and CEO, Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors says, “A simple tradition like Thanksgiving has the power to bring people together and create lasting memories – that’s the spirit behind Join Thanksgiving. We hope these funds will bring students together and create friendships and traditions that will serve them for life.”

As part of the initiative, Turkey Farmers of Canada teamed up with chef Liam Lewis, who has appeared in cooking segments on local TV shows during his teens and is now the sous-chef at the Montréal restaurant Entre Deux. Lewis aspires to “bring Gen Z and younger millennials into the kitchen and show that cooking is not only accessible but a rewarding life skill that brings people together.”
