Last chance for 2024: OFCAF intake opens to limited applications for Alberta

by

Alberta producers have another chance to access a piece of $1.4 million in funding through the On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF), beginning Sept. 6, 2024.

Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR), one of the Alberta administrators for OFCAF funding, will accept up to 150 additional funding applications for the 2024 year in order to fulfill their commitment to distribute all available funds to Alberta producers.

Mark Redmond, CEO of RDAR, said on a call with RealAgriculture that after a summer of receiving inquiries from producers about OFCAF funding opportunities, the additional funding of $1.4 million for another 150 projects is a good news story. According to Redmond, RDAR has approved 872 projects to date to a total of 15.5 million dollars.

OFCAF is a federal initiative that provides producers with financial support in the form of cost share funding to adopt and implement on-farm best management practices (BMPs) in the areas of: cover cropping, nitrogen management and grazing.

The program is intended to reduce the risk to producers of implementing these new technologies and techniques while helping them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and support increased carbon sequestration.

Applications for funding will be accepted through the ARGO Online Application System as of 8:00 am on September 6 on a first come, first served basis until the funding is fully committed.

There are additional restrictions or eligibility requirements within each priority stream:

Nitrogen Management – Strategies to reduce nitrogen use and reduce GHG emissions

Cover Cropping – Practices involving cover crops to improve soil health and capture carbon.

Rotational Grazing Practices – Techniques that enhance pasture management and reduce soil degradation.

Detailed application guidelines, tutorials and templates are available on RDAR’s OFCAF website, or by contacting their office at 1-877-503-5955 or [email protected].
