There are many things that are outside of a producer’s control when raising cattle. Rain, or lack of it, market prices, and predators can make farming livestock a risky business. Then there is the risk of having cows that do not birth easily, have low immunity, or do not process feed efficiently. While the first set of issues cannot easily be managed for, the second set can be managed through genetic selection.
In this first episode of the Ruminating with RealAg reboot, Betty-Jo Almond of AgSights and host Amber Bell discuss the possibilities that genetic selection provides, important traits to select for, the importance of record keeping (and how to make use of those records), as well as the possibilities behind supermarket QR codes.
So grab your favourite drink, a comfy chair, and settle in for the great conversation below!
Ruminating with RealAg is a RealAgriculture podcast series hosted by Amber Bell that focuses on all things bovine. We’re here to chew the cud on everything from the latest in cattle genetics, to how to keep your herd happy with rotational grazing, to winter feeding techniques and everything in between.
