It’s time for another episode of Wheat Pete’s Word!
On this episode, host Peter Johnson has a plan for letting clover grow as long as possible without sacrificing weed control, he explains why plants in the residue swath need more N, and why cereal rye is an answer to fleabane, not THE answer.
Have a question you’d like Wheat Pete to address or some field results to send in? Agree/disagree with something he’s said? Leave him a message at 1-888-746-3311, send him a tweet (@wheatpete), or email him at [email protected].
- Hot and dry weather coming in to help out the corn and soybean crop in Ontario
- Make sure you know the risks of silo gas!
- Where are the yield reports? Get them to Pete!
- Less wheat in Ontario? Oh no
- Huge straw yields tells you the potential was there
- Hot weather at pollination hurts wheat
- Cereal rye is useful but it’s not a perfect answer to fleabane. Allelopathy of cereal rye is short-lived. Cereal rye is only one mode of action
- Scout those cob counts
- Seeds per acre, to plants per acre, to cobs per acre. Sort out the losses
- Burndown results are good!
- Heat of the day and 30 gallons per acre
- No glyphosate on edible beans, please
- Check with your buyer
- Early early early is the name of the game for wheat
- Pre-harvest application on beans to get wheat in sooner? Can’t do glyphosate, usually. Reglone is the fastest, can get 5 days earlier, but also lose 3 bu/ac (at R6.5)
- R7 you gain 3 days but no yield loss
- Tramp damage and cost of application? Probably not worthwhile
- Cracked coats are a risk in over-dry beans
- 9 per cent moisture equals 8 per cent shatter loss (at the header)
- Seed size plays a huge role in getting the seeds per acre right
- Seeding rate by seeds per acre per seed lot, please
- More N for poor oats? Straw residue impacting oat growth
- Carbon to nitrogen ration in the windrow area is out of whack. Won’t be economical to “fix.” Next time: spread that residue evenly!
- Clover clipping — don’t let those weeds go to seed. Leave it as late as you can
