With the U.S. election just days away, there’s plenty of scenario planning currently underway, depending not only on whether it’s Harris or Trump moving into the White House, but on which party wins the House and Senate.
The decisions made by American voters and lawmakers in the coming weeks will have a large impact on North American agriculture, whether we’re talking biofuels, tariffs, tax policies, or trade agreements.
Sara Wyant, founder and president of Agri-Pulse Communications, based in Washington, DC, joins RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney in the conversation below to discuss the many “what ifs” that currently loom large on the U.S. farm policy front, including:
- How much weight to put into the polls;
- Potential House and Senate election outcomes and what they mean for ag policy;
- The feasibility of a Farm Bill in the lame duck and the possibility of ad hoc farm support programs;
- Lack of clarity on biofuel tax credit criteria, including whether feedstocks from Canada will be eligible (ie canola) under 45Z;
- The differences between Harris and Trump’s overall tax policy;
- Harris vs Trump’s differences on trade policy and the future of CUSMA/USMCA trade deal up for review in 2026.
