There is nothing quite like the smell and taste of a loaf of bread fresh from the oven. In the fall of 2026, more western Canadian wheat will have fewer miles to travel to get from the combine to the oven in Alberta.
Parrish and Heimbecker (P&H) Milling Group and the Alberta government recently announced the construction of a new, state-of-the-art flour milling facility in Red Deer County.
When asked what the motivation was behind choosing this location for the new plant, Mike Warkentin of P&H Milling Group says that Alberta and Western Canada has always been an important part of their milling portfolio, specifically with the dependence on western Canadian wheat that goes into the high quality flour.
When choosing a location, the list started with a lot of potential spots in the western half of the country. Ultimately, not only did the Alberta government put together a really great business environment for agricultural investment, but the location is very strategic between two major population centres and transportation is easy to access with the CPKC rail line and Highway 2 being right there, Warkentin says.
The new plant is expected to not only be state of the art, but have quick and easy unloading, as well as simple transportation options to get flour to market.
Farmers, bakers and citizens of Red Deer County can expect to benefit from this location in the near future, as the new P&H Milling plant is not only expected to create 200 jobs while it is being constructed, but will have openings for 27 full time skilled positions and will provide high quality flour to a wide variety of commercial bakeries and major pizza outlets, the company says.
