2024 marked the launch of Pioneer seed brand’s new Z-Series soybeans across North America, the fifth series the company has introduced in its 50 years of soybean breeding.
Canadian growers had limited access to the new genetics, which the company promised would deliver agronomic advantages, better disease defence, and higher yields. In this report from Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show at Woodstock, Ont., Pioneer Seeds Canada eastern seeds portfolio manager Chad Garrod says the Z-Series had a major impact in its first season, including playing a key role in a new world record for soybeans.
Garrod notes that earlier this year, Georgia grower Alex Harrell, smashed the world record soybean yield, harvesting 218 bu/ac from a field planted with a Z-Series variety — P49Z02E.
“Locally, what that means for us is, obviously, we know we’re on the right track,” says Garrod. “For Canada, and eastern Canada specifically, what it brings to the table is more yield.” He notes company trials have seen a yield bump of 2.7 bushels over its A Series lineup. There’s also better white mould, soybean cyst nematode and sudden death syndrome protection.
“I think you’re going to see Z-Series everywhere this coming year,” adds Garrod. “We’re ramping up production, and we’re excited to launch this right from a 0.1 maturity all the way to above a 3.0 maturity.” Check out the full interview below.
