With many cattle producers trying to cut costs, increase the productivity of their land, and have a tiny bit of a personal life, the idea of “out-wintering” has become a little more attractive in comparison to chilly daily feedings of corralled animals.
While ranchers have looked at options such as bale grazing, swath grazing, or residue grazing as potential alternatives to the traditional avenue of winter feeding in a pen, moving into a less controlled nutritional environment in the face of -40 degree winters comes with some very real concerns.
In this Ruminating with RealAg podcast episode, Barry Yaremcio of Yaremcio Ag Consulting and host Amber Bell ruminate on nutrition as they discuss the many different out-wintering feeding options. Listen in to learn how out-wintering differs from traditional winter feeding, things to consider when feeding cover crops, the effect that practices such as bale grazing have on the land for years to come, and so much more.
So grab your favourite drink, a comfy chair, and settle in for the great conversation below!
Ruminating with RealAg is a RealAgriculture podcast series hosted by Amber Bell that focuses on all things bovine.
