What it will take to repair the rift with India

by

Canada’s diplomatic relationship with India, and India’s relationship with Canada, may have reached a new low this past week, as six diplomats were given eviction notice by the Canadian government. India, in turn, served the same notice on Canadian diplomats in India.

First, let’s be clear: any government supporting, coordinating, or perpetrating crimes on Canadian soil should be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

Now, the subject at hand. Canada is once again accusing India’s government of having a hand in extortion and murder on Canadian soil. These are serious allegations to be sure, but the entire process of determining India’s role is fraught with political wrangling, closed-door meetings, and rumours of India snubbing Canada’s attempt to plead its case.

Colin Robertson is a former senior diplomat, a senior advisor to the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, and host of The Global Exchange podcast. From his vantage point, the current situation with India builds on decades of uncomfortable diplomatic relationships between the two countries.

But, Robertson says, the people-to-people ties between Canada and India are strong. Could those be enough to get these two countries back to firmer footing?
