Farm profitability pressure and trade’s value to rural areas

by

There’s no two-ways about it: 2025 is going to be a challenging season for farm profitability. It’s anyone’s guess right now what factors could pop up to push the commodity complex higher, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

John Newton, executive head of Terrain, spoke with RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney at the National Association of Farm Broadcaster’s meeting last week to talk about trade and the languishing Farm Bill’s role in overall farm profitability.

Newton says that he knows farmers are concerned about profitability in the year ahead, but that they remain optimistic on weathering this latest challenge. There are several factors at play, however, that it’s too soon to tell what impact they will have on the year. Donald Trump’s second administration is one factor; a stalled Farm Bill is another.

Noting that Mexico, Canada, and China are the top three markets for U.S. agricultural goods, Newton says that it’s imperative that the next agriculture secretary stress the importance of ag trade to farmers and rural America, as a whole.
