Ruminating with RealAg, Ep 13: Grazing for the land, livestock, pocketbook, and people

by

Words such as planned, rotational, management intensive and adaptive multi-paddock have all been used to describe grazing methods that mimic the movement of wildlife that would have grazed the Prairies many years ago. Some of these are also words that Kelly Sidoryk uses to describe her family’s grazing strategies.

Sidoryk and her family had initially taken up holistic management, which is a system of looking at grazing under the lens of land and livestock, economics and the human side of ranching, in order to improve productivity on crop land that had been converted to forages.

In this Ruminating with RealAg podcast episode, Sidoryk and host Amber Bell discuss not only the importance of rotating livestock on the landscape, but how minimizing overgrazing needs to be balanced with the economics and the human resource component of a farm.

So grab your favourite drink, a comfy chair, and settle in for the great conversation below!

Ruminating with RealAg is a RealAgriculture podcast series hosted by Amber Bell that focuses on all things bovine. We’re here to chew the cud on everything from the latest in cattle genetics, to how to keep your herd happy with rotational grazing, to winter feeding techniques and everything in between.
