Trump victory creates big questions for Canadian trade and agricultural policy

by

With the U.S. electorate re-electing Donald Trump as president, there are many angles of agriculture and trade policy that will have an impact on Canada. The day after the election I joined host Jeff Sammut on Canada Now, which is on Canada Talks 167 on SiriusXM, to discuss the impact. Jeff is always very curious about what is happening in agriculture, and it’s a great opportunity to talk about what’s happening and how broader news affects our industry.

Key topics covered in the interview:

  • Canadian Farmer Sentiment: Insights from the recent survey showing Canadian farmers’ views on which candidate would be best for Canadian agriculture, with 37% favouring Harris, 18% favouring Trump, and many feeling uncertain about future impacts.
  • U.S. Trade Policies and Impact on Canada:
    • Product of USA labelling requirements for meat, which could impose restrictions on Canadian exports.
    • The Inflation Reduction Act’s potential impact on Canadian biofuel markets, with significant tax credits potentially being limited to U.S. feedstock.
  • U.S. Farm Bill: Expected to prioritize U.S. farmers, potentially influencing Canadian pricing for commodities like corn and wheat, given the bill’s scale and scope.
  • Environmental Policies: We discussed anticipated shifts in U.S. environmental regulations that could impact cross-border farming practices and sustainable agriculture.
  • Canada’s Response: Potential areas for Canada to expand its trade if a U.S. trade war opens doors in other markets, alongside the challenges Canada may face due to the U.S.’ shifting policies.
