Wheat Pete’s Word, Nov 27: Winter weather, phosphorus decisions, and tillage talk

by

When asked about tillage, RealAgriculture’s Peter “Wheat Pete” Johnson says to do as little as you can. But when tillage is necessary what should it be — disc ripping? Moldboard plowing?

In this episode of Wheat Pete’s Word, Pete says that tillage erosion is 10 times worse than wind and water erosion. The disc ripper is a tillage erosion tool, the moldboard plow itself is not.

If growers want the benefits of the moldboard plow without the erosion risk, they need to act like they are practicing to win the plowing match, leaving it as level as possible. If they do that perfect job of plowing, the field will only need to be cultivated once.

Also in this episode hear about winter weather, phosphorus, soybean trials and you guessed it, more tillage.
