Land is a fundamental and finite resource, yet it is easy to overlook its value in our everyday lives.
Canada may have an abundance of land, but those acres are under immense pressure to serve multiple purposes—residential and industrial development, food production, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, solar and wind energy generation, recreation, and more.
As we kick off the third season of the Ag Policy Connection podcast, we’re teaming up once again with the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) to dive deep into the future of farmland and how to make the most of this critical resource.
In this first episode, we unpack CAPI’s new PLAN (Policies for Land use, Agriculture, and Nature) initiative. We tackle the challenges and trade-offs surrounding land policy and set the stage for this new series, exploring why every Canadian should care about how land is managed.
Meet our panelists:
- Margaret Zafiriou — Senior Research Fellow with CAPI, Margaret spent multiple decades working for the federal government on agriculture and ag economics files going back to the early 1980s. Her work with CAPI over the past six years includes several papers on land-use policy.
- Dr. Tom Nudds — A Distinguished Fellow with CAPI, Tom is Professor Emeritus at the University of Guelph where he taught and conducted research in the field of conservation biology from 1981 to 2012. Since then he’s worked with the forest industry and CAPI on projects related to conservation and the science-policy interface.
- Nicolas Mesly — A Disinguished Fellow with CAPI as well, Nicolas is a long-time journalist specializing in agri-food, trade, and ecological issues in Quebec, with his work appearing in agriculture publications, La Presse, and the CBC. He’s written numerous reports on water policy for CAPI over the last few years. Earlier in this career, Nicolas also served as the press secretary for former Minister of Agriculture, Eugene Whelan.
Join us as we explore what’s at stake and the policies shaping the future of Canadian farmland!
