Beef Market Update: Christmas markets, annual reflections, and a jump in carcass weights

by

The Christmas holidays are almost upon us and while Christmas markets may be busy with shoppers looking for the perfect gift in the coming weeks, the cattle markets have started to slow down in the U.S., as a lot of the buying has been done for the season.

Now that we have hit December it’s possible to look back and reflect upon the “really great run” that beef demand has had for 2024, says Anne Wasko of Gateway Livestock Exchange in this episode of Beef Market Update.

This week, Alberta saw some improvement in the cash market and while carcass weights backed off last week, 2024 is shaping up to boast a big jump in carcass weights over the historical average, with a similar story happening in the U.S. Wasko explains that this was due to a fairly reasonable cost of gain and record high fed-cattle prices. As she says, “one plus one equals two, let’s make the cattle bigger.”

Wasko and RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney go on to discuss the implications of weather, potential U.S. tariffs, the October StatsCan report on fed cattle exports, plant closures and potential capacity in coming years.
