Unifor, the union representing approximately 3,300 employees at CN in Canada, and CN Rail have announced a tentative, four-year collective agreement.
Unifor members provide mechanical, clerical, and intermodal functions for the railway.
No details of the tentative agreement will be released publicly until the agreement is ratified. The current collective agreement with Unifor expires on December 31, 2024.
This agreement was reached without any labour action.
In late August of this year, the Government of Canada intervened and invoked Section 107 of the Labour Code during a series of strikes/lockouts between CN Rail, CPKC Rail and the Teamsters Rail Conference, the union representing workers at both railways.
The use of Section 107 to force binding arbitration is being challenged legally by the Teamsters, as they allege it violated workers’ right to strike, as supported by the Supreme Court.
