Today, on the same day that the Liberal government will present the Fall Economic Statement, Chrystia Freeland submitted her resignation as Finance Minister to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
In a letter dated Dec. 16, Freeland writes:
“On Friday, you told me you no longer want me to serve as your Finance Minister and offered me another position in the Cabinet. Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the Cabinet…
“For the last number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada.”
Freeland says she plans to stay on as MP for University-Rosedale in Toronto and will run in the next election.
Freeland was serving as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister before today. She has been finance minister since 2020, and was first named to cabinet and 2015. She became an MP in 2013.
