Getting the most out of herbicide-tolerant wheat

by

Effectively controlling grassy weeds in a grass crop is always a challenge, and one that Dan Dall, regional commercial manager for the U.S. Central Plains, and Bailey Jenks, regional commercial manager for the Pacific Northwest, both with Limagrain Cereal Seeds (LCS), know all too well.

Dall explains that the CoAXium wheat production system offers farmers an option when trying to get a handle on brome and rye species, as well as other grassy weeds. He adds that the herbicide trait is a benefit of the CoAXium lines, but the varieties stand up well in yield trials as well.

In addition to the CoAXium line up, LCS offers Clearfield wheat lines as well, and they offer similar benefits says Jenks, but which one farmers choose will likely come down to weed spectrum pressure and varietal performance.

As with any trait, Dall adds that its important to consider stewardship of the herbicide-tolerant trait and to avoid back-to-back use of the chemistry, so as to decrease selection pressure of the weed spectrum.
