Eight-six per cent of farmers and ranchers across Canada view themselves as good stewards of the land and 46 per cent feel that they can do more to improve environmental outcomes on their operations.
These statistics come from a new national survey run by the research firm,Leger and funded by Farmers for Climate Solutions.
Farmers for Climate Solutions initiated the phone survey in an attempt to do a better job of charting a sustainable and resilient future for Canadian agriculture, says Brent Preston, president of Farmers for Climate Solutions, in this interview with RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney.
The data that the organization collected held a lot of interesting items, says Preston, one of the top being that farmers listed climate change as one of their top concerns over the next 10 years. Some of the other responses mentioned in the open ended question were things such as input costs, increasing government regulations, and severe weather events.
According to survey results, there is a strong interest in high resilience, low emission practices; however, the main driver towards adopting new practices is profitability and efficiency, which Preston says that coming from a producer’s perspective is easy to see.
Watch the full interview below as Preston and Haney discuss the results of the survey, including adoption of best management practices, where producers are receiving their information and the importance of strengthening extension in Canada.
