There are no shortage of issues when it comes to agricultural policy in Canada, and advocacy is important to ensure that farmers’ voices are heard.
The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) held its AGM last week and welcomes new president Bill Prybylski. In this interview with RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney, Prybylski says he’s really looking forward to having the opportunity to sit down with the decision makers in government to discuss agricultural issues through the lens of a farmer.
Some of the pressing items that Prybylski is looking forward to bringing up are the rail carbon surcharge, the need to maintain protection from escalating freight rates due to a lack of competition, fair grain contracts and programming that better reflects the needs Saskatchewan livestock producers.
With commodity prices dropping from the highs of the past couple of years and input costs not dropping at the same rate, Prybylski says that it is also imperative that as an organization, APAS continues to press for initiatives such as the removal of GST from essentials such as heating for barns and drying grain.
Hear the full interview below as Prybylski and Haney also discuss the possibility of 25 per cent tariffs from the U.S., plans for business risk management and the need for reliable movement of grain.
