St. Lawrence Seaway to get $350 million in upgrades

by

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) has announced it will spend $350 million in infrastructure upgrades over the next three years. These infrastructure upgrades position the Seaway to meet future demands, ensuring resilient supply chains, says the SLSMC.

The St. Lawrence Seaway enables ships to sail from Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean, creating a deep-draft inland navigation system extending 3,700 kilometres. The Great Lakes to ocean corridor generates approximately USD$50 billion of economic activity.

As part of the three-year project, there will be upgrades made to locks and bridges, improvements to energy infrastructure, and upgrades to mechanical and structural systems.

Upgrades in the plan include more than $170 million in the Montreal to Lake Ontario region and $180 million in the Welland Canal region. These upgrades will enhance critical infrastructure, ensuring strong supply chain links and reliable transportation for goods, the company says.

The upgrades are set to wrap up by March 31, 2027.
