Variety and hybrid diversification is about mitigating risk, higher yields, and maximum profit

by

Diversity can mean many things to many people and when it comes to a grower diversifying variety choices, the goal is to mitigate risk, push yields, and maximize profit on every acre.

Speaking to RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney at the National Association of Farm Broadcasters’ convention in Kansas City, trait and disease diversification are two items that Bryant Luers of LG Seeds mentions when a grower is looking at diversifying their seed lineup, especially as there has been a focus on disease diversification due to farmers encountering issues with diseases such as tar spot in the last few years.

When it comes to how many different hybrids a farmer should have, Luers says that it varies by farm, but as the variation in soils and productivity go up, so should the variation in products.

Luers stresses the importance of growers having a conversation with whomever they really trust when it comes to decision making regarding a seed package on the farm. Just diversifying by brand could have a farmer seeding the same resistance or trait package unintentionally.

Listen below as Luers and Haney discuss the importance of seed diversification, LG Seeds trials, and tar spot.
