The Indo-Pacific region is one that Canada has identified as deserving of extra attention and investment. It’s no wonder, as Canadian farmers, producers, and the agri-food sector sent a total of $22.8 billion of agriculture and agri-food products to the region in 2023.
A growing middle class and a demand for high quality products makes Indonesia, specifically, a key part of the trade region. Last month, Canada announced it had secured the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Dennis Laycraft, executive vice president of the Canadian Cattle Association, says that securing a quality trade deal for any market is a critical step to making the most of trade potential.
What makes a quality trade deal? Beyond just equal to or preferential access versus main competitors, Laycraft says hammering out the details to inform processing changes, any required certifications, navigating market regulation transparency, and more, all factor into a quality agreement.
