There has been a lot of buzz on social media recently regarding Canada allowing the use of 3-NOP in cattle feed. 3-NOP is an additive that is used in cattle to reduce methane emissions and has been approved for use in Europe, Australia, the United States, and most recently in Canada in January of this year.
In Canada, it’s common for products to be approved in order to improve animal health or efficiency, but approving products for environmental benefits is new to the industry, says Dennis Laycraft, executive vice president with the Canadian Cattle Association in this interview with RealAgriculture’s Shaun Haney.
Laycraft stresses the importance of having the right processes in place for new products being introduced to the market. These processes need to look at both the efficacy and safety while staying scientifically based. In the case of 3-NOP he says that it has been studied in the markets in which it has already been released and it’s been demonstrated to be safe, as well as effective at reducing methane emissions.
Currently the product is not widely being used in Canada, outside of some feed trials, due to a lack of available supply and a high price point.
