Who will best be able to work with Trump?

When 2024 started, the RealAg Issues panel referred to some big political decisions that would be made prior to the next review or negotiation of the CUSMA/USMCA trade deal. On the horizon was Mexico’s national election; the U.S. was set to head to the polls in early November, and it was anyone’s guess if Justin Trudeau would remain as Liberal leader or Prime Minister.

Fast forward to present day, and two of the three countries in CUSMA have voted in their new leaders: Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico and Donald Trump in the U.S. Perhaps against insurmountable odds, Justin Trudeau is still Prime Minister and the leader of the Liberal party — at least for now.

Trump has already sent off a warning shot ahead of his second presidency, and Trudeau responded with a sit-down dinner at Trump’s Florida compound. Is this a sign of a better-than-last-time relationship?

Abacus Data has been polling Canadians on how they feel about not only Trudeau (spoiler alert: it’s bad) and the Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, and last month asked Canadians who of Canada’s party leaders they thought would work best with Trump and who Trump is perceived to want to work with.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Trudeau does not fare well up against Poilievre. But is it because Trudeau himself is so disliked or because of Poilievre’s own attributes? The RealAg Issues Panel, in this special bonus segment, dug in to the question of “Who is best to work with Trump?
