Wiesemeyer and Haney: Is integrated supply chains a bad word in dealing with Trump?

by

Words matter. When it comes to strategic negotiations, choosing words carefully can mean the difference between a productive dialogue that gets everyone closer to a deal or act like a wedge that splits an insurmountable gap between parties.

For Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet, choosing the right strategy when working with incoming U.S. President Donald Trump will be critical to keeping trade flowing between the two countries. But, as Jim Wiesemeyer, Washington correspondent for Pro Farmer, explains, some of the typical words and phrases used to persuade other countries or administrations are unlikely to be so accepted by this new administration.

In this clip from Wednesday’s webinar on Canada/U.S. relations co-hosted with the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute, Wiesemeyer and Shaun Haney tackle pinch points between Canada and the U.S., including:

  • Trade deficits;
  • Integrated supply chains being a bad word;
  • Dairy TRQ allocations;
  • Currency risk; and,
  • Shifting goal posts.
