Canadian colleges and universities are already feeling the pinch to budgets from announced changes by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in late 2024 that will curtail the number of international students allowed into Canada.
Algonquin College, based in Eastern Ontario, is one college that has already announced major plans to restructure in light of the immigration changes and provincial funding shortfalls, it says. Effective spring of 2026, the college says it will shutter its Perth campus and move all programs to the Woodroffe Campus in the City of Ottawa, including the Business Agriculture program first launched in the fall of 2019.
The official decision will be made at the February 24th board meeting, but students and staff were informed late last week of the impending campus closure set for August 2026. In a memo circulated to staff and students, the college says it has been conducting a full review of programs of study, as well as administrative and support services since the fall with a view to “focusing resources on core operations.”
“Every area of the College is being reviewed and will be impacted. Details of these additional measures will be finalized soon and will be communicated directly to the College Community,” the memo reads.
All courses on offer, including Business Agriculture, are moving to the city campus, the college says. Until that time, all courses will continue as usual at the Perth Campus.
