Forage association’s 40 year legacy continues with a new name, renewed focus

Research and extension organizations across the country have been at the centre of many agricultural communities for decades. In Alberta, organizations under the Applied Research and Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA) umbrella are examples of the impact that can be made on the agricultural community by dedicated boards made up of farmers and industry.

One such organization, Grey Wooded Forage Association (GWFA), has just celebrated their 40th anniversary as a non-profit extension centre in the province. As times change, names need to be updated and that is something that the GWFA board of directors put a lot of thought into when it comes to the future of the organization.

In an effort to refresh the brand of the non-profit, the board made the decision to change their name to Central Alberta Forage and Livestock Association (CAFLA) which they feel better represents the region that CAFLA serves, as well as the two pillars of the association which are forages and livestock, says Tatyana Pavlovets of the newly minted CAFLA at the Western Canada Conference on Soil Health and Grazing at Edmonton, Alta.

Pavlovets says that the success of CAFLA’s long standing organization lies in being in touch with the constituents of the region to gain a good understanding of what the needs are and how the organization can meet those needs. She says that it is important to keep that legacy going.
