Manitoba to host pilot canola Yield Enhancement Network (YEN)

by

Manitoba growers will be the first to participate in a canola Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) hosted by the Canola Council of Canada starting this growing season.

YENs are peer-to-peer learning groups that use benchmarking as a way to determine what management decisions result in not only the highest overall crop yield, but also achieve the closest to yield potential in a given season. There are already YENs in Ontario and the Maritimes in Canada, but this is the first canola-focused YEN.

The Canola Council has tasked Antara Agronomy based in southern Manitoba with running a pilot project in the Red River Valley this year. Brunel Sabourin, co-founder of Antara Ag, says that benchmarking crop production is a great way to first figure out where you’re at, where you could be, and how to get there.

Jason Casselman, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada, says that a YEN is a great way to help capture the full genetic potential of the canola crop. It also provides an opportunity to really measure the impact of individual practices on yield.

Sabourin says the added work required of farmers for participating will be minimal for this pilot project, but will require some information sharing and yield measurements at harvest. See below the player for a link to sign up.
