Cover crops are all the not-quite-so-new rage and the process of integrating them into current agricultural systems has been gaining ground (pun intended). Seeding multiple species in a field can do some fantastic things for the land, such as enhance water holding capacity, improve soil biodiversity, provide added resistance to pests and disease, and improve carbon sequestration in the soils… but are they profitable?
This is one of the questions that Connor English of Covers and Co. and host Amber Bell seek to answer in this episode of Ruminating with RealAg.
It is pretty difficult in Canada to talk about cover crops without also discussing winter feeding methods, which naturally leads into conversation about calving, weaning, mixed farms and making economical decisions, all of which are talked about in this episode.
English runs a mixed operation with his family near Bradwardine, Man., and has a real passion for diversity and trying new things. So grab your favourite drink, a comfy chair, and settle in for the great conversation below!
Ruminating with RealAg is a RealAgriculture podcast series hosted by Amber Bell that focuses on all things bovine. We’re here to chew the cud on everything from the latest in cattle genetics, to how to keep your herd happy with rotational grazing, to winter feeding techniques and everything in between.
