Much of the focus of soil conservation practices emphasize decreasing the movement of soil by wind and water erosion. These forms of soil movement are costly from a soil health, farm productivity, and environmental standpoint, however they are not the largest erosion risk to a field.
That honour belongs to tillage erosion — the act of moving soil from one area to another in a field, usually from the higher elevation to the lower, exposing the B horizon and dramatically decreasing the productivity potential of between five and 15 per cent of a field.
To explore more on how tillage erosion happens and its cost, this Season 5 kick-off episode features Dr. David Lobb with the University of Manitoba and Phil Needham of Needham Ag Technologies.
