The Liberal leadership race is trickier than first appears

by

With Monday’s news of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepping down as leader comes a flurry of questions — who will be the next leader and thus Prime Minister? How long will they actually govern? Will they name a new cabinet? Plus, what happens to all those government bills and Private Member’s Bills in the process of becoming law?

Some answers are more clear as the week draws to a close, such as who is NOT making a bid for the Liberal leadership, i.e. Dominic LeBlanc, and Melanie Joly, however there are still plenty of unknowns to navigate says Nick McRoberts, vice president of Winston Wilmont.

What will be particularly tricky is how the Liberal party plans to even host this leadership race, set to end on March 9. The clock is ticking, too, as prorogation of Parliament ends March 24, a scant 10 weeks away.  McRoberts says that given the revelations of the foreign interference inquiry, transparency and integrity will be paramount in this race.

Whomever steps in to the Liberal leadership role will be the next Prime Minister, though for how long is yet to be determined. As McRoberts explains, the next sitting of Parliament is unlikely to survive long — possibly only days. It is possible, though highly improbable, that when parliament resumes sitting government bills or PMBs are brought back, however the government would need agreement of the house to do so and agreement is not something the current House of Commons is known for.
