One of the newest cereal graminicides on the market,
Varro® FX has won a lot of converts since its introduction in 2024. “It really did exceed our expectations,” says Tim Gardner, Bayer’s Customer Solutions Agronomist in North Saskatchewan. “Both in terms of product handling and weed control.” An emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation, Varro FX includes Group 2 and Group 4 active ingredients. It’s highly effective against tough grasses and Group 1-resistant wild oats, now estimated at more than 60% of wild oat populations across the Prairies.

With the Varro FX EC formulation, the first for Group 2 graminicides in Western Canada, growers can expect to save a lot of time and hassle when it comes to tank-mixing and cleanout. Varro FX also hit the market with plenty of tank-mix flexibility already in place. “We used it with lots of tank-mix partners,” Gardner confirms. “It’s amazing how well it works with a well-known product like Buctril® M in the tank.” In a tank-mix with Buctril M, Varro FX delivered 91% control of kochia¹ and more than 94% control of wild oats².

Tim Gardner adds that Varro FX is a key player in weed resistance management strategies. “With so many tank-mix partners, it fits really well if you’re looking to change up modes of action to manage the threat of resistance.” Depending on your unique weed spectrum, Varro FX can be tank-mixed with phenoxys such as Thumper® or Infinity® to control cleavers, volunteer canola and other broadleaf weeds. Primarily a graminicide, Varro FX can also be counted on to boost control of cleavers and kochia in a tank-mix. Varro FX is also versatile when it comes to soil types, and well-suited to both brown and dark brown soils.

Of course, there’s more to consider as you continue to build your integrated weed management strategy. Bayer’s crop production experts recommend you should also:

  • Understand your weed challenges so you can make the best choices for control
  • Use multiple weed control tactics such as crop rotation
  • Calibrate your sprayer after winter storage and when changing products or crops
  • Rotate herbicide groups and track that rotation.

Varro FX can be part of that strategy. With multiple modes of action, an easy-mixing formulation and plenty of tank-mix partners, what’s not to love? Bayer’s Tim Gardner has some advice to share: “As you’re preparing your weed control plan, you may want to sit down with your Bayer rep or retailer to identify the weeds you need to control in wheat this year.”

According to Gardner: “You can put together a really good recipe for this year with Varro FX as the primary graminicide. It’s a great foundational layer for your weed control program.”
