Saskatchewan farmer will use his voice for agriculture in the Senate

by

Todd Lewis is in Ottawa this week getting well acquainted with the ins and outs of how the Senate of Canada runs. The Saskatchewan farmer officially became a senator last Friday, and is ready to dive into representing his province and his industry in the red chamber.

Lewis said the entire process happened very quickly after receiving word he’d be completing an interview for the appointment. While he had applied to the senate some time ago, the actual appointment and call directly from the Prime Minister happened over a matter of days.

Joining agriculture industry members Rob Black of Ontario and Mary Robinson of PEI, Lewis is excited to bring more of the voice of farming and food to the senate. For too long, he says, agriculture has been under-represented in Ottawa. He’s going to work to change that.

In accepting this appointment, Lewis will step away from his current role as vice president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and a municipal board position he’s held nearly 20 years.
